NAMES/ATTRIBUTES OF GOD -- 'L'

by Hallie Gipson

What can we possibly say that is adequate to describe the essence of Almighty God?! Our finite minds cannot begin to grasp with full understanding who God is! But I am forever grateful for His Word that gives voice so beautifully to descriptive terms that we can understand.

LIGHT

The Psalmist declares the Lord to be his light.

Psalm 27:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation.”

In the book of Luke we are given the account of Jesus being presented at the Temple when he was 8 days old.

Luke 2:21, 25, 27-28, 30-32
“And when eight days had passed, before His circumcision, His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.  And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. . . And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, “. . . For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A Light of revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people, Israel.”

Jesus declares Himself to be the Light

John 8:12
“I am the Light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

1 John 1:5
“God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.”

LIFE

John 11:25
“Jesus said to her (Martha), “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies.”

John 14:6
“Jesus said to him (Thomas), “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Colossians 3:4
“When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.”

LOVE

1 John 4:16
“We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

LAMB OF GOD

John 1:29
“The next day he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

Revelation 5:12
“ . . . Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”

Revelation 12:10-11
“Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony . . .”
