Has it
already been more than a year since I began “God’s Attributes and Names”? To
say that life has intervened and events have conspired would be an understatement!
But it is very fitting to pick up our ‘fresh approach’ using the letter “E”. So as I focus on a few
E-attributes and names of God, I hope you will meditate on the Who of God as it
relates to Who He is to you.
EXALTED
–- praised
highly; glorified
Psalm 92:8 “But
you, O LORD,
are exalted forever.”
Psalm 148:13 “Let
them praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the
heavens.”
Isaiah 6:1 “In the
year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, seated on a throne, high and
exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.”
Acts 5:29-31 “Peter
and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men! The God of
our fathers raised Jesus from the dead –- whom you had killed by hanging him on
a tree. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he
might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.”
Philippians 2:9 “Therefore
God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every
name.”
EXCELLENT -- superior
Hebrews 1:3-4 “He is
the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he
upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for
sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as
much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than
theirs.”
EQUAL –- the same in rank or quality
John 5:18 “For
this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him (Jesus); not only was he
breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making
himself equal with God.”
Philippians 2:5,6 “ . . .
Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality
with God a thing to be grasped . . .”
ETERNAL
–- ageless; enduring;
immortal
Genesis 21:33 “Abraham
planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the
LORD,
the Eternal God.”
Deuteronomy 33:27 “The
eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
Isaiah 26:4 “Trust
in the LORD
forever, for the LORD,
the LORD,
is the Rock eternal.”
I Timothy 1:17 “Now to
the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for
ever and ever. Amen.”
1 John 5:20 “We
know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that
we may know him who is true And we are in him who is true – even in his Son
Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”
EVERLASTING –- never wears out
Nehemiah 9:5 “And
the Levites . . . said: “Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is
from everlasting to everlasting.”
Isaiah 9:6 “For to
us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his
shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 40:28 “Do you
not know? Have you not heard? The LORD
is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow
tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”
Jeremiah 31:3 “The LORD appeared to us in
the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you
with loving-kindness.”
Holy Father, I cannot possibly
absorb all that You are and have been and will be for all of time and eternity!
But I stand firm in the knowledge that You are Who You say You are --- Exalted,
Excellent, without Equal, Eternal and Everlasting. Praise You!!
